Softball Clinches Playoff Berth with Doubleheader Sweep of Gwynedd Mercy

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University softball team wrapped up their Atlantic East Conference schedule with two wins over Gwynedd Mercy University Monday afternoon.

The Pacers defeated the Griffins 10-2 in game one followed by a 13-12 walk-off win in the nightcap. The team honored seniors Alex Dusman, Riley Marshall, and Tori Para prior to the contest.

Game One; Gwynedd Mercy 2, Marywood 10 (6 inn.)
Marywood wasted little time setting the tone, capitalizing on an early Gwynedd Mercy error to jump out in front in the first inning. Tori Para delivered an RBI double to bring home the game's first run before Marissa Hoffman followed with an RBI single. That double also cemented Para as Marywood's all-time career leader in doubles.

After Gwynedd Mercy scratched across a run in the second inning, the Pacers answered right back. A sacrifice fly from Marley Sarafinko extended the lead.

The visitors pulled within one again in the third, but Hoffman quickly erased any doubt in the bottom half of the inning, blasting a solo home run.

Marywood broke the game open in the fourth. Para struck again with a two-run double and later came around to score on a wild pitch as part of a three-run frame.

The Pacers continued to pour it on in the sixth inning. RBI singles from Renee McDonald, Lauryn Notari, and Kat Davis capped a three-run surge, sealing the victory.

At the plate, Marywood racked up 15 hits, with Para leading the charge by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Davis also collected three hits, while Hoffman added two hits and drove in two runs, highlighted by her home run. Notari chipped in with a pair of hits and an RBI as part of the balanced offensive attack.

In the circle, Brianna Voyer delivered a steady outing, allowing just four hits and two earned runs over six innings while striking out four to earn the win.

Game Two: Gwynedd Mercy 12, Marywood 13
The Pacers (19-13, 7-5 Atlantic East) built an early cushion but had to withstand a relentless offensive effort from Gwynedd Mercy, which piled up 19 hits and erased deficits throughout the game before Marywood answered in its final at-bat.

After falling behind 2-0 in the opening inning, Marywood responded immediately with four runs in the bottom half. RBI hits from Amber Little and Notari highlighted the frame, with Notari delivering a two-run double.

Marywood added three more runs in the second inning, taking advantage of timely hitting and a Gwynedd Mercy error to extend the lead. Para and McDonald each drove in runs during the surge.

Gwynedd Mercy chipped away in the third inning with three runs of its own, cutting the deficit to 7-5 behind RBI hits from Giavanna Kanaris and Makayla Mihelcic.

The Pacers answered again in the fourth, pushing across two runs on a sacrifice fly from Notari to make it 9-5, but the Griffins refused to go away. A three-run sixth inning brought Gwynedd Mercy within one, and the visitors completed the comeback with a four-run seventh inning to tie the game at 12-12.

Marywood had the final response. In the bottom of the seventh, Sarafinko reached and moved into scoring position before Little delivered the decisive hit, singling to center field to bring home the winning run and secure the 13-12 walk-off victory.

Little led the Pacers offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while McDonald added two hits and three RBIs. Notari also drove in three runs, and Para scored twice as part of a balanced Marywood attack that produced 13 hits.

In the circle, Megan Linkhorst earned the win in relief, tossing the final 1.2 innings.

With the pair of wins, the Pacers clinched a berth in the Atlantic East Tournament, marking Marywood's 18th consecutive postseason appearance.

Marywood closes out the regular season on Wednesday as they host crosstown rival University of Scranton on Wednesday, Apr. 29 at 3 p.m.
