Softball Earns Split Against Centenary

Hackettstown, N.J.- The Marywood University softball team split a high-scoring Atlantic East doubleheader with Centenary University on Tuesday afternoon, cruising to a 13-4 run-rule victory in the opener before dropping a 16-14 slugfest in game two.

Game One: Marywood 13, Centenary 4 (5 inn.)
The Pacers wasted no time setting the tone, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Tori Para ignited the offense with an RBI single before Amber Little followed with a run-scoring double. Riley Marshall capped the inning with a two-run double to give Marywood a commanding 4-0 lead.

Marywood continued to apply pressure in the second, adding two more runs behind Para's RBI double and a run-scoring single from Renee McDonald. The Pacers tacked on another run in the third when Para delivered again with an RBI single, extending the advantage to 7-0.

The fourth inning proved decisive as Marywood broke the game open. The Pacers scored four times despite recording just one hit in the frame, capitalizing on walks and aggressive baserunning. Brianna Voyer drew an RBI walk, Kat Davis added an RBI single, and Marley Sarafinko chipped in with a sacrifice fly. A heads-up steal by Davis helped push the lead to 11-0.

Centenary responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Marywood added two more insurance runs in the fifth, highlighted by Sarafinko's RBI groundout, before the Cyclones scratched across one final run in the bottom of the inning to account for the 13-4 final.

Para led the Pacers offensively, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Davis added two hits and an RBI, while Marshall drove in two runs and scored twice. Little also had a multi-hit effort with two RBIs.

In the circle, Voyer earned the win, tossing all five innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out two.

Game Two: Marywood 14, Centenary 16
The Pacers came out swinging, plating five runs in the opening inning to seize early control. RBI hits from Ariana Shellman, McDonald, Marshall and Lauryn Notari highlighted the surge.

Marywood extended the lead with another five-run outburst in the third inning. Mia Antolino delivered a two-run double, Sarafinko added a sacrifice fly, and Para and Shellman each drove in runs to make it 10-1.

The Pacers kept rolling in the fourth, pushing the margin to 13-1 behind Sarafinko's two-run double and Para's RBI single.

But the game turned dramatically in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Centenary sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs on eight hits, capitalizing on a combination of timely hitting, walks, and defensive miscues. Key hits from Hailie Giberson, Julia Sorrentino, and Alyssa Tronolone fueled the rally, while multiple Marywood errors helped the Cyclones erase the 12-run deficit and take a 14-13 lead.

Marywood briefly tied the game in the fifth when Shellman lifted a sacrifice fly to score Little. However, Centenary answered again in the sixth inning. Sorrentino delivered a two-run single to center field to put the Cyclones ahead and helped them get the game two victory.

Little paced the Pacers with a perfect 5-for-5 performance at the plate, while Para went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Shellman added three hits and a team-high four RBIs, and Sarafinko contributed two hits and three RBIs.

In the circle, Marywood used three pitchers with Voyer taking the loss in relief.

Marywood returns home to take on King's College on Thursday at 3 p.m.
