Men’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Mighty Macs

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University men's lacrosse team dropped an Atlantic East Conference matchup to Immaculata University, 8-5, on Wednesday evening at Pacer Turf Field.

The Pacers struck first and carried early momentum, as Mitchell Thompson opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. Osten Grigas followed with a goal later in the period to give Marywood a 2-1 edge. However, Immaculata responded with a late tally to even the score at 2-2 heading into the second.

The game turned decisively in the second quarter, when the Mighty Macs erupted for four unanswered goals. Ryan Gorman ignited the run early in the frame, and Aaron Headley and Matt Frame each found the back of the net before Jude Azzarano capped the surge.

Immaculata extended its advantage in the third quarter with two more goals. Azzarano and Headley led the charge offensively, combining five goals and multiple assists, while Jason Smaron added a goal and two helpers to pace the attack.

Marywood showed signs of life late in the third when Grigas scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Owen Kelly. The Pacers continued to battle in the fourth quarter, as Kelly netted back-to-back unassisted goals to trim the deficit to 8-5 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Despite the late push, Marywood was unable to close the gap further.

Kelly led the Pacers with three points on two goals and an assist, while Grigas added two goals. Thompson contributed a goal and was active on both ends, collecting four ground balls and causing three turnovers. Luke Ament controlled the faceoff for Marywood, winning 14 of 17 draws.

Colin Trainor made eight saves in goal for the Pacers.

Marywood held advantages in faceoffs (14-3) and ground balls (30-26).

The Pacers (5-9, 0-2 AEC) head to Neumann on Saturday.
