Pacers Rally Past Oneonta in Five-Set Thriller

Oneonta, N.Y.- The Marywood University women's volleyball team remained unbeaten Wednesday evening, rallying past SUNY Oneonta, 3-2, in a five-set thriller at Dewar Arena, winning 25-15, 24-26, 21-25, 25-16 and 15-8.

Marywood came out firing in the opening set, jumping to an early 3-0 lead behind three consecutive kills from Taylor Hallam. After Oneonta briefly pulled even, the Pacers used a 9-1 run to build a commanding 20-11 advantage. Ayla Bransford sparked the surge with three service aces, while Hallam continued to deliver offensively as Marywood closed out the set.

The Red Dragons responded in the second set, building a 13-9 lead before Marywood mounted a comeback. The Pacers eventually tied the set at 19-19 and surged ahead, 24-23, after consecutive service aces from Bransford. Oneonta, however, answered with three straight points to take the set.

Oneonta carried its momentum into the third set, but Marywood battled throughout. The Pacers took a 14-14 tie before the Red Dragons began to create separation late in the frame. Marywood pulled within two at 23-21, but Oneonta secured the final two points to win  and move within one set of the match.

Facing a must-win fourth set, the Pacers responded emphatically. Marywood opened a 9-4 advantage and never surrendered control. The Red Dragons trimmed the deficit to 16-15, but the Pacers answered with a 5-0 run to regain command. Marywood finished the set on a 9-1 run, with Bransford recording a service ace for set point as the Pacers forced a decisive fifth set.

Marywood had all the momentum in the final frame as they jumped ahead 5-2 and later extended its lead. Oneonta pulled within two, but the Pacers responded with six consecutive points to take a 13-7 advantage. Bransford delivered two more service aces during the decisive run, and Hallam's kill gave Marywood match point at 14-8. The Pacers closed out the victory on the next point.

Hallam led Marywood with a match-high 15 kills while hitting .522, adding three block assists for 17.5 points. Bransford contributed 10 kills, 10 service aces, 22 assists and seven digs. Genevieve Pollock and Billie Leet each added eight kills, while Piper Herauf provided 12 assists and 10 digs.

Catie Woolf anchored the defensive effort with 10 digs and added four assists.

Emma Morretta led Oneonta with 12 kills, while Corynna Manjos and Shea Landversicht added seven kills apiece. Hailey Herrera and Layla Pertchik each finished with 18 assists, and Lillian Slattery paced the Red Dragons with 12 digs.

The Pacers (6-0) host Gwynedd Mercy and Lycoming College in a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 12.
