Women’s Volleyball Keeps Rolling, Sweeps Pair at Home

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University women's volleyball team moved to 8-0 on the season as they swept Gwynedd Mercy University and Lycoming College in their first home tri-match of the season Saturday afternoon at the Insalaco Arena.

Marywood took down the Griffins, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21.

Marywood overcame a back-and-forth opening set before pulling away late. The Pacers trailed 9-6 early but used a 9-1 run to take a 15-10 advantage. Gwynedd Mercy battled back to within two points at 21-23, but Marywood closed the set on a kill by Ayla Bransford.

Marywood controlled the second set from the outset. The Pacers built a 7-4 lead before Gwynedd Mercy answered with a brief run. Marywood responded with another strong stretch, extending its advantage to 20-14 before closing out the set.

The Pacers faced their toughest challenge in the third set. Gwynedd Mercy took an early 5-2 lead and held a 12-11 advantage before Marywood turned the momentum. Taylor Hallam's service ace gave the Pacers a 15-14 lead, and Marywood followed with a five-point run to move ahead.

Gwynedd Mercy refused to go quietly, trimming the deficit to 19-18, but Marywood answered with four of the next five points. After a Gwynedd Mercy service error made it 21-19, Madison Smith followed with an ace, and Genevieve Pollock and Bransford recorded kills to put the Pacers at match point. A final Marywood service error gave Gwynedd Mercy one more point, but Bransford ended the match with a kill for the victory.

Bransford led the Pacers with 12 kills on 21 attacks, hitting .476, while also recording 12 assists, two service aces and nine digs. Hallam added five kills, four block assists and two aces, and Gracee Work contributed five kills and two block assists.

Smith recorded 14 digs and two aces for Marywood, while Catie Woolf added 12 digs and two aces. Piper Herauf recorded 19 assists.

Kate Etter paced Gwynedd Mercy with 10 kills, while Carley Leonard added five kills. P.J. Mendoza collected 12 digs for the Griffins.

The Pacers swept the Warriors by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-22.

Marywood established control early in the opening set after Lycoming took a brief 4-3 lead. The Pacers answered with a 5-0 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Carolina Samaniego and an ace from Herauf, to take an 8-4 advantage. Marywood continued to build its lead, using a dominant serving stretch from Woolf to move ahead 18-8. Woolf recorded two aces during the run, while Ayla Bransford added a kill. The Pacers eventually closed out the set, 25-13, on a service ace from Hallam.

The second set was much tighter in the early going, with the teams' trading points through a 3-3 tie. Lycoming then used a strong serving run from Kamryn Skeith to take a 7-3 lead. Marywood steadily chipped away at the deficit, pulling even at 11-11 after consecutive aces from Mia Summa.

From there, the Pacers took control. Marywood scored five of the next six points to move in front 16-14, then stretched the lead with a series of kills and blocks. The Pacers closed the set on a 9-2 run, with Pollock contributing a kill and a service ace before Hallam finished the frame with a kill and Woolf capped it with another ace for a 25-15 win.
Lycoming put together its strongest challenge in the third set, building an 8-4 lead and later holding a 12-8 advantage. Marywood responded behind its serving game, as Woolf delivered back-to-back aces to pull the Pacers within one at 12-11.

The teams battled through several ties from there, reaching 15-15 before Lycoming moved ahead 17-16. Marywood answered with three straight points, including a kill from Work and an attack error to take an 18-17 lead. Herauf then added an ace, and Marywood extended its advantage to 20-17.

Lycoming rallied once more, cutting the deficit to 21-20, but Marywood remained composed down the stretch. Pollock delivered a kill to make it 23-21, and Bransford followed with another point. After Lycoming pulled within 24-22, Bransford ended the match with another kill to secure the set victory and the sweep.

Pollock added nine kills, while Work and Bransford each finished with seven. Bransford also contributed 16 assists and five digs.

Woolf recorded six aces while adding 11 digs. Herauf totaled 17 assists and three aces, while Smith contributed six digs and two aces.

The Pacers welcome Misericordia University in their MAC Freedom opener on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
