Women’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Decision to Misericordia in MAC Freedom Opener

Scranton, Pa.- Marywood University women's volleyball battled Misericordia University through five sets Tuesday night in its first-ever MAC Freedom match, but the Pacers fell to the Cougars, 3-2, at Insalaco Arena.

Marywood drops to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in MAC Freedom play following the 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 10-15 setback. Misericordia improves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Marywood overcame an early 10-8 deficit in the opening set by responding with a 9-2 run to take a 17-12 advantage. The Pacers continued to control the set behind their offense, extending their lead to 23-18 before Misericordia answered with a pair of points.

Marywood closed out the opening frame on consecutive points, with Genevieve Pollock recording a kill before Catie Woolf followed with a service ace to give the Pacers a 25-18 victory and a 1-0 lead.

Misericordia responded in the second set, using a 7-0 run to turn a 9-6 deficit into a 13-9 advantage. Marywood pulled even at 20-20, but the Cougars scored five of the final six points to even the match at one set apiece.

The third set again belonged to Misericordia. The Cougars built an 11-10 lead before putting together a 9-2 stretch to move ahead 20-12. Marywood attempted to rally late, cutting the deficit to 23-17, but Misericordia closed out the set to take a 2-1 lead.

Marywood answered in the fourth set, battling back from an early 5-4 deficit to take a 9-8 lead. The teams continued to trade points throughout a tightly contested frame, with neither side able to pull away. Misericordia held a 16-15 advantage before Marywood responded with three straight points to move in front, 18-17.

The Cougars regained a 20-19 edge, but the Pacers again rallied, tying the set at 20-20 and eventually taking a 24-23 lead. Taylor Hallam then delivered the deciding blow, putting away a kill to give Marywood a 25-23 victory and force a fifth set.

Marywood grabbed the first point of the fifth set on another Hallam kill, but Misericordia quickly took control. The Cougars scored six consecutive points to build a 7-1 advantage and extended the lead to 10-4.

Marywood refused to go quietly, putting together a four-point run behind a Samaniego ace, a kill by Pollock and two Misericordia errors to cut the deficit. Misericordia, however, answered with three straight points to close out the match.

Hallam led Marywood with 13 kills, hitting .476 for the match. Gracee Work added 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while Billie Leet recorded nine kills and four total blocks. Samaniego finished with seven kills and a team-high 15 digs, and Pollock also contributed nine kills.

Ayla Bransford directed the Marywood offense with 46 assists and added seven digs, two service aces and a block. Woolf collected 12 digs, four assists and two aces, while Madison Smith totaled eight digs and two aces.

Misericordia was led offensively by Isabella Lutter, who posted 13 kills, 18 points and eight digs. Jennifer Nicometo and Keira McCaffrey each added 11 kills, while Cassandra Genduso finished with 11 kills and four blocks. Katie Royds contributed 28 assists, 16 digs and two aces.

The Pacers will look to bounce back Thursday when they return home to host Wilkes University at 7 p.m.
