Women’s Volleyball Battles Past Wilkes in Four Sets

Scranton, Pa.- Marywood University's women's volleyball team continued its strong start to the season Thursday night, rallying past Wilkes University 3-1.

The Pacers improve to 9-1 overall with the 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23 victory, while Wilkes fall to 7-3.

Marywood set the tone immediately, opening the match with a 5-0 run behind four service aces from Ayla Bransford. The Pacers continued to build their advantage throughout the opening frame, taking a 17-6 lead before Wilkes attempted to mount a comeback. Marywood answered each challenge and closed out the set, 25-15, on a kill from Genevieve Pollock.

Wilkes responded in the second set, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage and later stretching the margin to 10-5. Marywood battled back to tie the set at 10, sparked by kills from Taylor Hallam and a strong defensive sequence, but the Colonels regained control. Wilkes eventually opened a 23-17 lead and held on for a 25-20 victory to even the match.

The Pacers regained their momentum in the third set. Marywood scored the first three points and later turned a 4-3 advantage into an 11-4 lead. Wilkes trimmed the deficit, but the Pacers maintained their composure and pushed their lead back to six. Marywood finished the set on a 3-0 run, with Gracee Work recording back-to-back kills to secure a 25-18 win and a 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set saw Marywood overcome an early 4-1 deficit, with the Pacers answering with five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. Wilkes eventually pulled even at 12-12, but Marywood regained the advantage with a 5-0 run that included kills from Pollock and Taylor Howard.

The Colonels chipped away at the deficit, getting within three at 18-15, but Marywood answered with kills from Work and Hallam. Wilkes continued to battle, cutting the margin to 22-20, but a Hallam kill pushed Marywood ahead 23-20.

After Wilkes pulled within two, Pollock delivered a kill to give the Pacers match point at 24-21. Wilkes answered with two more points to pull within one at 24-23, but Pollock put the match away with another kill, securing the four-set victory for the Pacers.

Hallam led Marywood with 11 kills on 15 attempts for a .733 hitting percentage. She also added three service aces. Work finished with eight kills, while Pollock contributed seven kills and three block assists.

Bransford directed the Pacers' offense with 24 assists and added six service aces, while Piper Herauf finished with 13 assists. Catie Woolf anchored the defensive effort with a match-high 20 digs, and Howard posted five total blocks.

Mia Leon led the Colonels with a game-high 13 kills, followed by Kendra Kalp with 12. Emilee Atherholt registered six blocks, leading all players. Maddy Durfee led the team with 18 assists, while Annalyse Santowasso led the defense with 16 digs.

Marywood travels to Widener University on Saturday for a tri-match, facing the host Pride at 11 a.m. before taking on Kean University at 1 p.m.
