Women's Tennis Opens '17-18 Campaign at King's Invitational

No team scoring in event, Pacers host Misericordia Sunday

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - Marywood University's women's tennis team opened ther 2017-18 season at the King's College Invitational at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre Saturday and Sunday. While there was no team scoring the event, Marywood freshman Deena Mahdavi was crowned champion in the #8 singles flight.

Mahdavi was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Susquehanna's Nicole Brotzenhoff to end the weekend. Mahdavi had a 6-1, 6-0 semifinal win over teammate SarahPaganelli and defeated Kayla Rembish of Misericordia 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round.

Other singles flight highlights include Emily Edwards advancing to the semifinals of the #7 flight after a opening round win (4-6, 6-0, 10-5) over Alexis Zalutko of King's. Edwards fell 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in the semis to Susquehanna's Hanna Maykut.

Emily Zarrilli also went to the semis in the #6 flight as well where she fell to Christina Rudderrow of Susquehanna, 6-1, 6-0. Zarrilli earned an opening round bye. Devin Zombek, playing in the #5 flight, also advanced to the semifinals with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 opening round win. In the semis, she fell to Sarah Donner of Elizabethtown 6-1, 6-1.

Zombek and Zarrilli advanced to the #3 doubles semifinals after an 8-6 win in the first round. In the semis, they fell 8-3. The duo of Gina Babcock and Brooke Panek advanced all the way to the finals in the #4 doubles flight. Babcock and Panek had an opening round bye and won 9-7 in the semifinals before dropping in the finals, 8-2.

Marywood will host Misericordia University Sunday at 2:30 pm.
