Towson, Md. - The Marywood University Women's Swimming and Diving team picked up their first dual meet win of the season in dominant fashion, losing only two events in route to a 112-85 victory over Goucher College.
The Pacers started off the meet taking first and third in the 200 medley relay. The top team of
Sam Truter,
Maia Clasby,
Mia Nardone, and
Mary Cate Coyle clocked a 2:00.97, while Anna Marie Betkavsky,
Andrea Pannoni,
Emily Bubel, and
Courtney Paulus came in with a 2:12.85.
Going into the individual events, Marywood made sure to strike a significant blow early as sophomore
Christine Llewellyn, freshman
Sara Fetter and Pannoni went one, two, three in the 1000 freestyle. The Pacers continued to keep the pressure on as Coyle, Nardone, and senior
Julia Randolph took the top spots in the 200 free (2:08.95), 50 free (27.66), and 200 IM (2:24.69) respectively before the first break of the meet.
The Pacers started off the second portion of the meet with another one, two, three sweep, this time in the 200 fly. Nardone took the top spot with a time of 2:24.57, with freshman
Emily Bubel and senior
Seychelle Duckworth taking the second (2:35.35) and third (2:44.10) spots respectively. Coyle and Randolph would each provide another win in the 100 free (56.17) and 200 back (2:26.63), putting the meet out of reach for the Gophers. The only individual loss of the meet for the Pacers would come in the 500 freestyle and it was almost a victory itself. Starting the race slower and more strategically, Llewellyn fell behind by up to half a pool length at one point over Goucher's Kathryn Shannon. However, in the last 100 yards of the race, the sophomore was continuously gaining on her Gopher opponent up to the final wall, where she was out touched by about a body length, 5:49.46 to 5:51.80. Fetter and Betkavsky provided a second (6:01.39) and fourth (6:37.27) to keep the Pacers strong going into the second break.
Something about the races right after the breaks seemed magical for the Pacers as they returned to the 200 breast with their third one, two, three sweep of the evening. Clasby (2:43.64), Pannoni(2:58.00), and sophomore Rebecca Rottger (3:07.63) provided the final individual sweep before the last relay.
The Gophers came away with the final win of the evening in the 400 free relay with the team of Jamie Damm, Shannon, Maddie Chism, and Ila Jackson pulling away in the final yards to take home the victory with a 4:08.43. Llewellyln, Randolph, freshman
Hannah Darmofal, and Duckworth finished second with a 4:10.09.
The swimming and diving teams return to action on Jan 18 when they will compete in a tri-meet against local rivals Misericordia University and the University of Scranton, hosted by the Cougars. Meet begins at 4:30PM
