Pacers Rack Up Season Highs in Four-Set Win over Griffins

Marywood celebrates Dig Pink Game

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University won its second consecutive match with a 3-1 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday in Atlantic East Conference volleyball action. The Pacers improve their record to 9-12 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
 
Marywood won by scores of 27-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18.
 
Rebecca Klemovitch recorded 15 kills with a .270 attack percentage. Shannon Corr reached double figures with 10 kills.
 
Sara Burgos had season highs with 39 assists and 16 digs. Annie Heyen provided half of the team's aces with five.
 
Defensively, the Pacers notched 105 digs and season-bests from all five players in double figures. In addition to Burgos, libero Donna Bostjancic had a team-high 26. Evangeline Kelley tallied 14 digs, Heyen recorded 13, and Mikayla Meek dug 11.
 
In the first set, Marywood found itself trailing 21-19 when coach Bill Schutter called a timeout. A five-point run gave the Pacers set point, in part to a service error and three attack errors. Klemovitch put the Pacers ahead 24-21, but the Griffins rallied with four straight points of their own. The Griffins earned set point (25-24) on an Ashley Brown kill.
 
Corr evened the score at 25-25 on a kill. Heyen locked set point on a short serve with backspin that trickled over the net for an ace.
 
In the second set, both teams were tied 9-9 when Marywood went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 lead on a Mikayla Meek kill. The Griffins trimmed the deficit to 20-19 with a Julia Rabe kill. Klemovitch halted the Gwynedd Mercy comeback chances with back-to-back kills followed by a double block with Meek.
 
Marywood rushed to a 11-5 lead in the fourth set, thanks to a 7-1 run on Meek and Corr serves. The Pacers held on to their advantage thanks to three Emily O'Brien kills the rest of the way. Burgos secured match point on a kill via O'Brien.
 
The Pacers (9-13, 2-1 Atlantic East) celebrated their Dig Pink Game with contributions towards breast cancer research. Marywood stays local to take on Misericordia University and Keuka College in Dallas, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
