BASEBALL MATCHES WIN STREAK RECORD, DROPS NIGHTCAP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hackettstown, N.J. – Marywood tied a program record for consecutive wins with a 7-0 win over Centenary but could not set a new mark as the Cyclones rallied for a 9-8 win in an extra-inning nightcap.

Marywood (12-4, 2-1 Atlantic East) extended their win streak to eight games with the opening game victory, matching a program best set in 2005. Marywood's 12-4 start is still one of the best in program history.

In the opening game, Marywood took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Ben Gravel singled to right to score Kyle Morin for the game's first run. The Pacers then exploded for six runs in the seventh as Jake Schuster opened the scoring with a two-run blast to deep left center field. It was Schuster's third homer of the season. Quinton Roma followed with a two-run double down the left field line that scored Morin and Michael Tempel

With a five-run lead, Marywood added two more when Joseph Bruno's hard shot at third forced an error and brought home Quinton Roma and Myers.

Nick Notari (3-0) pitched a gem on the mound to remain undefeated, scattering six hits and allowing just one extra base hit in his complete-game victory. Notari used just 72 pitches over his seven innings on the mound, striking out three without walking a batter for the win.

Schuster and Roma both finished the opener 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Each team had six hits.

Vinny D'Auria opened game two with a leadoff homer to left, his second long-ball of the year. Marywood doubled their lead in the third on an RBI fielder's choice with Tempel at the plate, and went up 3-0 with a bases loaded walk in the fourth.

Centenary responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth with a sac fly to center, and tied the game 3-3 in the fifth after a run scored on a passed ball and an RBI groundout.

The Cyclones would grab their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the seventh as a run scored on a Marywood throwing error, but the Pacers tied things up in the eighth on a Matthew Ortiz RBI double to left field that scored Gravel, but Marywood left runners stranded on second and third as the inning ended on an infield groundout.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, relief pitcher Matthew Klipple and the Pacers' defense got out of a jam with a play at third to thwart a sac bunt attempt and a strikeout to end the inning.

In the ninth, with their win streak in jeopardy, Marywood's offense came through again, albeit aided by multiple Centenary miscues. After reaching on an error, Schuster would score on a passed ball. Tempel then scored on an error, and yet another Cyclones' miscue allowed Morin to score before D'Auria's RBI double to left scored Gravel. All runs Marywood scored in the ninth were unearned.

Those extra runs proved necessary, as Centenary got a one out, two-run single from Paul Links in the ninth to make it an 8-6 ballgame, and that was followed with a Nicholas Gattuso two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game and force extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th, CJ White entered as a pinch runner at first, moved to second on a balk, over to third on a passed ball and home on a wild pitch to score the winning run.

The Pacers are slated to host Penn State Schuylkill for a non-conference game Wednesday with a 3:00 pm start time.
