Schutter Retires Following Six-Year Run

Marywood advanced to Atlantic East semifinals in all five postseason tournaments

Scranton, Pa. — Bill Schutter announced his retirement as the Marywood University head volleyball coach following six seasons, effective on Nov. 30. A search for a replacement to coach the Pacers is currently ongoing.

Schutter leaves his post with the third-most victories (58) in program. He led the Pacers to five consecutive Atlantic East Conference semifinal appearances — the longest such run in Marywood history.

"I would like to thank Marywood for giving me an opportunity to coach the Pacers volleyball team for the past six years," Shutter said. "I have bled green and gold since I started here in 2019. I believe the volleyball program is in a much better place than it was when I took over. I held the team, myself and the school to the highest standards, and I hope that continues.

"I will forever cherish the time at Marywood and making connections with my players throughout the years, many of whom still stay in contact."

During his tenure at Marywood, the Pacers had received seven Atlantic East All-Conference honors (2 First Team, 5 Second Team) and one Atlantic East Major Award Winner (Gianna Norton, Rookie of the Year, 2023). Schutter's Pacers served as the ECAC Division III tournament hosts in 2019.

"Bill took over Marywood volleyball after we went through numerous coaches over several years and perhaps most importantly, provided the program with stability" said Andrew Smith, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "With that stability came success on the court and in the classroom, and we are grateful for his dedication and commitment to Marywood and the program. We know Marywood Volleyball is set up for future success because of the groundwork Bill laid."

Off the court, his Pacers excelled in the classroom. Marywood won three AVCA Team Academic Awards and two Atlantic East Team Academic Awards (2020, 2022) for highest GPA in the conference.

His student-athletes broke several program records including:
  • Jordan Vossler, single-season digs (2019), career digs
  • Peri Sheerin, career kills, atttacks
  • Casey Hagerstrom, career attack percentage
  • Sara Burgos, career assists
  • Mikayla Attwood, career block assists
Schutter will continue to serve as the Valley View High School boys volleyball coach in nearby Jessup.
