NCAA PREVIEW | Pacers Head to Wesleyan (CT) for NCAA Division III Field Hockey Opening Round

This is the second straight tournament appearance for Marywood

Middletown, Conn. – Marywood University will compete in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships for the third time in school history on Wednesday. The Atlantic East Conference champion Pacers will head to Middletown to take on No. 7 Wesleyan University at 6 p.m.

The Pacers (11-9) captured their third Atlantic East title with a 3-0 victory over Neumann University on Saturday. Dariane Jones scored twice, once off a penalty corner and her second was off a penalty stroke. Brooke Barwick manufactured an insurance goal in the third quarter. 

Jones was named the Tournament MVP at the championships site. 

The Pacers went undefeated in conference play to secure the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs.

Scouting the Cardinals

Seventh-ranked Wesleyan checks in with a 14-4 record. The Cardinals earned an At-Large bid into the NCAA Division III Field Hockey tournament. 
  • Marywood and Wesleyan have never met in program history.
  • The Cardinals have six players in double digits for points. Georgia Adams led the offense with nine goals and six assists for 24 points. Leila Feldman contributed 11 goals and an assist for 23 points. 
  • Wesleyan outscored opponents 39-21 this season. 
  • Wesleyan is ranked sixth in the most recent NPI rankings. The Cardinals are 1-3 against teams with a higher rank, beating #4 Middlebury 2-1 (2OT). Wesleyan is 13-1 against teams with a lower rank.

  • The Pacers faced Johns Hopkins last season in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 6-0. Jenny Keagy and Sabrina Frazer split time in the cage, making eight saves apiece. 
  • In the Pacers' 2019 NCAA appearance, they lost 1-0 to FDU-Florham on Nov. 13, 2019. Marisa Mongioi had three defensive saves, and Sara Sterchak had a defensive stop. Kerri Mountz made 12 saves. 
  • The winner of the Marywood-Wesleyan will advance to the Babson regional. They will take on the winner between SUNY Geneseo and Hamilton.
