Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University esports inched toward first place in Overwatch with a 2-1 victory over Cumberland University (Tenn.) on Thursday night. The Pacers improve their record to 5-1 in the Emergents Yellow division, trailing Clark University (Grey) by one match.
In an upset opening round, Cumberland took Ilios after three rounds with a 2-1 decision. After an initial round one, Cumberland made an adjustment into Mei that disrupted the flow of the Pacers. But after a five-minute timeout, the Pacers came roaring out of the gate onto Eichenwalde.
Powered again by a strong Doomfist attack from
Steven Espana-Arias, the Pacers took a strong 3-1 win. On the final map, the Pacers full held on a perfect defense and won swiftly on attack.
The Pacers will square up against Clark Grey in a pivotal matchup for the top of the standings next week.
