Haines Takes Down Division II Competition to Win 5K at Lock Haven

Lock Haven, Pa. - Marywood University senior David Haines won the 5,000-meter race against an all-Division II field Saturday at the Lock Haven University Earlybird 2021 meet. The Pacers competed in men's outdoor track and field for the first time since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Marywood was the lone NCAA Division III institution at the competition. With the exception of NAIA Point Park University, the meet consisted entirely of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) programs.

Haines crossed the finish first with a time of 15:12. Facing a field of 16 runners, Haines beat out Shippensburg's Hayden Hunt by nearly four seconds to win the event.

Jefferson Fontaine placed eighth in the 100 dash in 11.44 seconds. Fontaine also took 11th in the 200 meters with a time of 23.39 seconds. He was eighth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 8 1/4 inches (6m).

Caleb Bakalyar etched his name into the record books with the second-fastest steeplechase time in school history. Bakalyar completed the 3,000-meter race in 10:51 to place third.

The men's 1,600 relay of Noah Schock, Nathan Skrutski, Jefferson Fontaine and Michael Kelly earned fourth place by clocking in at 3:36.14.

Eric Spivak established a 3,000-meter record of 10:54 for 12th place.

Marywood will take on more PSAC competition on Saturday, April 3 when it travels to West Chester University.
