Men's Swimming and Diving

Koehnke, Barry, Clasby Shine Despite Loss to Catholic

Meet Results

Scranton, Pa. - Bri Koehnke, Carson Barry, and Maia Clasby all won two events in a strong performance for the Pacers' swimming and diving teams despite losing their home opener to the Catholic University of America.

Women: Catholic 191 Marywood 102

Swimming in her first individual event of her college career, Clabsy could not have asked for a more dramatic finish in the 100 breaststroke.  The entire race saw her go stroke for stroke with Cardinal Cagney Boyle.  Everything came down to the last few yards, where both women appeared to lunge for the wall simultaneously.  However, it was Clasby who would prevail by a mere hundredth of a second with a time of 1:13.60, to give the Marywood women their first win of the night.  The freshmen had earlier been a part of the women's 200 medley relay that had finished third.

Clasby's stellar night was only though beginning as she headed to the one meter board with Koehnke.  Both women delivered a fantastic performance, but it was the more experienced Koehnke who would prevail with a score of 197.05 as Clasby finished second with a 179.45.

Clasby would return to the pool once again, this time to compete in the 200 yard breaststroke.  She took the lead early, but received a challenge from Catholic freshman Aubrey McDonough.  However, Clasby was unaware of McDonough throughout the first half of the race, as the Cardinal was swimming in an outside lane.  Going into the last 50, Clasby spotted her competition and poured on some closing speed to triumph for the second time of the night with a 2:39.39, more than a second ahead of McDonough.

Koehnke would also pick up another win on the three meter board.  Competing without Clasby, the sophomore prevailed over Catholic sophomore Colleen O'Callaghan by scores of 168.15 to 128.85.

Other individual event winners included freshman Emily Bubel in the 200 Butterfly and senior Julia Randolph in the 200 IM.  Bubel's triumph was also in the first individual event of her college career.  She started the race strong, building an early lead in the first 50.  Though she began to fade towards the end, she managed to hold on for the win with a time of 2:30.97.  The opposite would prove true for Randolph.  Despite falling behind after the butterfly leg, she used the last three strokes, particularly the ending freestyle to slowly climb even with and then pass her Cardinal opponents, posting a time of 2:24.61.

Men: Catholic 196 Marywood 85

Facing the defending Landmark Conference champion Cardinals would prove to be no easy feat, but the Pacer men saw strong performances from Barry as well as several veterans.

Jared Lubarsky would be the first to strike for the Pacers, winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.00.

Sophomore Nick Dubinski would see all of the drama in the 100 breaststroke that his female counterpart Clasby saw in hers immediately before.  Coming from behind going into the last 25 yards, Dubinski was able to make up the half body length lead that Catholic's Gregory McCarthy had over him before lunging for the wall.  However, this photo finish did not tip in the Pacer's favor and saw McCarthy also triumph by one hundreth of a second with a 1:01.61 to Dubinski's 1:01.62.  Dubinski would also go on to post a solid second place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.77.

Junior Wesley Yancey would regain momentum for the Pacers by winning the 200 butterfly.  The first time competing in the event, Yancy swam a very tactical race and was able to outlast his opponents to triumph with a time of 2:18.24.

Senior Blake Burlingame would keep that momentum going in the 50 freestyle, capturing the win with a time of 22.50.

It was Barry, however, that would be the men's biggest asset by taking first place honors in both diving events.  Fresh off of setting a new school record on the one meter board, Barry would post another successful performance with a score of 173.30 over Catholic's Will Chester (150.50).  The freshmen would also go on to the win the three meter event with a score of 147.05 over Chester (126.40) despite failing a dive along the way.

The swimming and diving teams are back in action on Nov. 4 as they travel to Madison, N.J. for a tri-meet against Drew University and Susquehanna University at 1:00 PM.
