The highest winning percentage women's basketball coach in Marywood history, Dempsey led the Pacers to a 133-110 (.570) record in his ten seasons (1983-93) at the helm.

Among the teams accomplishments were the school's first NCAA National Tournament appearance in 1987, an Eastern States Athletic Conference Northern Division title in 1986 and Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Northern Division in 1992.

Dempsey's 1988 squad led all of the Division III Nation in three-point field goals made, while under Dempsey four of Marywood's five 1000 point plus scorers came under his guidance. His fellow coaches honored Dempsey as PAC Co-Coach of the Year in 1992.

Dempsey's 1986-87 NCAA tournament team was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, becoming the first team to be inducted.
